Infertility is the inability of one's body to conceive. It affects both genders for a variety of environmental, lifestyle and genetic or physical reasons. Infertility affects about 12 percent of American women between the ages 15 and 44, according to the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth.

Seeing as most couples have been trying to conceive for at least six months to a year before consult a doctor and receiving years of treatment, infertility can be an expensive and emotionally draining problem to deal with and not everyone with infertility issues will be able to accept any of the alternative ways to start a family.

Accepting infertility is an important part of preparing for adoption, and this may mean that a couple needs to fully grieve for their lost ability to procreate. If only one of the people in the couple is infertile, they can choose to use a surrogate. The surrogate would carry the child and give it up to adoption by the couple after it's born. The other adoption option is via agency or independently.
