Therefore using common sense in the application of the various birth control methods is more helpful advice for sexually active men and women who want to avoid pregnancy.

There are three basic categories of birth control: contraception, contragestion and abortion. Contraceptives are preventive actions that a woman can take to avoid pregnancy. There are three kinds of contraceptive methods: barriers, such as condoms and diaphragms, oral contraceptives, such as birth control pills, and those that are injected, such as Cyclofem. Contragestive birth control is used to prevent pregnancy after intercourse by preventing a blatocyst from implanting in a woman's uterus. There are two basic forms of this birth control: intrauterine devices and morning-after pills. Finally, the last way to avoid seeing a pregnancy to term is to interrupt it with an abortion.

For those who do not want to use any of the above-mentioned forms of birth control, there are riskier options. These options are behavioral methods are are not as effective as other forms of birth control at helping a woman avoid pregnancy. These include the rhythm method, lactational amenorrhea method, interrupting intercourse with the withdrawal method and non-penetrative intercourse.
